Deicide - In The Minds Of Evil (2013 NN Promo)

"After a few years of waiting and right off the heels of what I think was Deicide’s best album title (To Hell With God) comes the band’s new release in the form of In The Minds Of Evil. But what makes this album different from other Deicide albums, is that this disc actually seems to adopt some traditional death metal elements and doesn’t simply just see the band backed by rambunctious drums. Thrash riffs open the disc’s title track as Glen Benton delivers some of the best fucking vocal lines of his life. This continues right on into the blazing “Thou Begone” and goes right back into thrash on “Godkill,” which also features some incredible fucking vocal gravel from the dark master himself. Glen just seems full of fire this time around; there’s no doubt that he really put everything he had into this release. Like one massive ejaculation of fucking death metal, it’s definitely not an album to be missed this year..."

A Perfect Circle - Three Sixty (2013 NN Promo)

This represents a link to a review of a Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) music promo that I wrote for New Noise Magazine. No copyright infringement is intended from this post. If you feel that copyright has been infringed, please contact me at blueravenheartmalty@yahoo.com and I will delete this post. Thank you.

"I wasn't quite sure what Three Sixty was at first, but having been a fan of A Perfect Circle (featuring Maynard James Keenan of Tool and Puscifer, as well as Billy Howerdell of Ashes Divide) ever since their debut album, Mer De Noms (and I can even admit to you that the album didn’t make sense to me the first time I played it), I was immediately thrilled at the chance to review a new release. But Three Sixty is not a new release, per se. It’s a collection of the band’s greatest hits, which I know more than a thing or two about since I know most of these songs by heart. This release also contains “By And Down,” the group’s first brand new song in over a decade..."

Warmaster - The End Of Humanity (2013 NN Promo)

"Warmaster play a brand of old school death metal that’s certainly worth checking out if that’s what you’re looking for. The album’s production is especially raw and features the vocals at the forefront, complete with the same diseased riff chugs that you would expect from the genre. Nothing is missing here, and I’m sure you can sense influences from Bolt Thrower and Master among others that I’ve been able to point out here and there. Excessive percussion brutality is not the name of the game here, but neither is plodding soundscapes as everything seems to be oiled well enough and doesn’t get redundant too easily..."

Slight Delay :(

Due to my new work schedule, there will be a slight delay in Week 91. I only have 14 more to write and will try to get the rest of them done as soon as possible, but as of right now it doesn't seem like I'll have it up until sometime next week. Tuesday or Wednesday, perhaps. But rest assured that there are already more than enough to post (11 I think) as it is, yet I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I want to make sure that every album I had in the list for 91 gets reviewed.

Lack of sleep due to dayjob is the culprit, so I do apologize. Even though it wasn't going to be mentioned until Week 91, I am cutting the amount of reviews down from 25 every two weeks, to 12 every week. The Holidays are coming, so I won't have as much time. Plus, I'm working on a new music project and a novel.

However, I did recently send off 9 reviews to New Noise Magazine, so some of you should see your records up there shortly. :)

I'm trying folks, but in America, the holiday season is always difficult.

Code - Augur Nox (2013 NN Promo)

"Ladies and gentlemen, the record that I’m about to review here is especially worth taking note, as it just might be one of the best metal records of the year; if not the decade. Code should be well familiar to most of us by now for not only having crafted one of the most memorable approaches to progressive black metal in 2009’s Resplendent Grotesque, but for also having been nominated for a Spellemann Award, the foreign equivalent to a Grammy. However, the approach on this release is a quite unexpected one that none of us would’ve ever thought these guys would pull out of their hats – not in a thousand years. While it’s still certainly black metal, the band has turned their efforts much in the vein of classic avant-garde acts like Ved Buens Ende and Arcturus. And yes, it sounds just as good as you might expect – as a matter of fact, these guys are revolutionizing the avant-garde genre with this powerful and thunderous metal release..."

Ephel Duath - Hemmed By Light, Shaped By Darkness (2013 NN Promo)

"The first new album in five years and follow up to 2009’s Through My Dog’s Eyes; the new Ephel Duath release is finally upon us. This time Karyn Crisis of Crisis and the Karyn Crisis Band is on lead vocals, with guest appearances by Erik Rutan of Cannibal Corpse on guitar and backing vocals. Marco Minneman of Nekrophagist and Kreator is behind the kit this time, with Bryan Beller of Dethklok, Joe Satriani and The Aristocrats is on bass duties. Karyn Crisis has a very different approach than some of you might expect for the album; and I definitely have a tough time getting into it, but there’s no doubt that this album will certainly find fans of her sludge-like approach (which came off a bit nasally when she wasn’t performing harsh vocals, in which she excels.) Noctum - Final Sacrifice (2013 NN Promo)

"Even though Noctum is considered occult rock by the label, I don’t think I would personally consider them a rock band. Well, not completely. These guys basically utilize many of the same riffs that Mercyful Fate and Black Sabbath have used throughout the years (with a slight fusion of rock), but I would certainly classify them in the realms of classic metal, or at least occult hard rock. What I’m trying to say is Noctum make a very heavy sort of music, no matter what you want to call it. But I will certainly say that it’s not something I haven’t already heard before, as it reminds me an awful lot of Ghost and the bands that inspired them. (Hint: I’ve already named them.) "
